Influence of Diurnal and Inertial Boundary- La Yer Oscillations on Long-range Dispersion

چکیده
Coupled meteorological and Lagrangian particle models are used to examine horizontal dispersion over one to two diurnal cycles. Seven numerical experiments were run in which different portions of the atmospheric energy spectrum were included or excluded in the simulation of releases of a non-buoyant pollutant from an elevated point source. The results of the experiments indicate that vertical shear in the horizontal wind produced by diurnal and/or inertial oscillations in conjunction with or followed by vertical PBL mixing are capable of maintaining plume growth rates which are nearly linear with diffusion times up to 48 h. The mode! results agree reasonably well with long-range dispersion observations of an isolated smelter plume made in Australia. Periods of accelerating diffusion found in the simulations have also been indicated in observations. These accelerating diffusion periods in the simulations are due to time-dependent shear in the planetary boundary layer at night. Shear due to synoptic-scale horizontal temperature gradients was also found to have a significant impact on the modeled plume growth rates. With such a gap, horizontal growth rates which are linearly proportional to time can be maintained out to at most one hour. Gifford (1982) points to more recent observations of the atmospheric energy spectrum such as those of Gage (1979), which do not exhibit a spectral gap. as evidence of the presence of mesoscale energy

Observations of urban boundary layer structure during a strong urban heat island event
It has long been known that the urban surface energy balance is different to that of a rural surface, and that heating of the urban surface after sunset gives rise to the Urban Heat Island (UHI). Less well known is how flow and turbulence structure above the urban surface are changed during different phases of the urban boundary layer (UBL). This paper presents new observations above both an ur...
متن کاملInfluence of the Imperfect Interface on Love-Type Mechanical Wave in a FGPM Layer
In this study, we consider the propagation of the Love-type wave in piezoelectric gradient covering layer on an elastic half-space having an imperfect interface between them. Dispersion relation has been obtained in the form of determinant for both electrically open and short cases. The effects of different material gradient coefficients of functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) and ...
متن کاملObservations over an annual cycle and simulations of wind-forced oscillations near the critical latitude for diurnal–inertial resonance
Sea breezes are characteristic features of coastal regions that can extend large distances from the coastline. Oscillations close to the inertial period are thought to account for around half the kinetic energy in the global surface ocean and play an important role in mixing. In the vicinity of 301N/S, through a resonance between the diurnal and inertial frequencies, diurnal winds could force e...

Against the range-dependent accuracy of the tracking radar measurements including range, elevation and bearing angles, a new hybrid adaptive Kalman filter is proposed to enhance the performance of the radar aided strapdown inertial navigation system (INS/Radar). This filter involves the concept of residual-based adaptive estimation and adaptive fading Kalman filter and tunes dynamically the fil...
متن کاملPeriodicity of Downward Longwave Radiation at an Equatorial Location
A good understanding of the diverse mechanisms in the atmosphere is required in modelling the climate. In this study, the diurnal and seasonal patterns of all-sky downward longwave radiation (DLR) at Ilorin (8o 32l N, 4o 34l E), Nigeria were investigated alongside relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The average diurnal pattern of DLR gives an arc that begins by increasing gradually with som...
